Alex Newhook rather than Pierre-Luc Dubois for the Canadian

Once the Pierre-Luc Dubois file was shelved, the Montreal Canadiens turned around and acquired the rights of young forward Alex Newhook from the Colorado Avalanche.  Kent Hughes traded the 31st pick, obtained from the Florida Panthers , and the 37th pick in the 2023 draft and defenseman Gianni Fairbrother, a 22-year-old prospect.  During his press briefing, Kent Hughes refused to talk about the Pierre-Luc Dubois case, since he is a player under contract with another team.  The Habs boss, however, was clear when asked if the trade to Colorado was done because it didn't work out with the Jets.

We could not have done both , admitted laconically Hughes.  Newhook, 22, had 30 points, including 14 goals, in 82 games last season. He added one assist in seven playoff games.  In 159 games with the Avalanche, he had 27 goals and 39 assists. He will become a free agent with compensation on July 1 if the CH does not sign a new contract with him.  The 1.78 m (5 ft 10 in) and 86.2 kg (190 lb) center won the Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2022.  The athlete from Saint-Jean (NL) was the 16th overall choice in 2019, immediately after that of forward Cole Caufield by the Habs.  Both Kent Hughes and Martin St-Louis have praised the versatility of the newcomer.  “  The versatility, the speed and the character that corresponds with what we want to establish with our team, in addition to the experience of having won the Stanley Cup.  »  — A quote from  Kent Hughes Hugues was once Newhook's agent, which certainly weighed in the balance.

When you know someone as a person, it's sure easier to know how they're going to fit into our locker room. And we are very convinced that he will be a good piece in the locker room.  The keys to the repechage At the moment, the Canadiens hold the fifth overall pick. Kent Hughes and his hockey men have not yet made their choice on the lucky winner, but the DG has not closed the door to other exchanges.  We definitely have more than one name in mind. We think that in fifth place, we will have a good hockey player, if we keep our choice. If we advance, we are even safer. And if we go back, it depends…  The Nashville Predators could be interested in this fifth pick. They have two first-round picks (15th and 27th) and, during a press conference Monday with its president David Poile, Barry Trotz did not hide that he had tried to improve his lot. He reportedly said Kent Hughes holds the keys to the draft .

David and I both picked up the phone trying to improve our rank , Trotz said.  You need to find the right dance partner to move forward. Everyone is trying to get into the top four, and it's reasonable to believe that these four teams will stick around.  It remains to be seen whether the 5th rank interests the new general manager of Nashville enough to bring him to waltz with Kent Hughes.

NHL Draft 2023: Winners and losers from Round 1, including Coyotes’ inexplicable picks

Watch Full

The Chicago Blackhawks won the NHL Draft. There. Done. It doesn’t matter what happens from here, because the Hawks got a generational talent in Connor Bedard who should be able to change their on-ice culture quickly and turn Chicago back into a winning team on his own.  Yes, he’s that damn good — and if the front office can put more help around him we’ll see something very special.  The issue is that the pick still feels so ... icky. There’s no better way to say it. We have a scenario here the best player in years is headed to one of hockey’s largest markets, to play for an Original Six team, with a fanbase that deserves a change in fortune — and yet, it’s still ridiculous this was allowed to happen.  We cannot just celebrate Bedard heading to Chicago without continuing to mention, over, and over again, that the Blackhawks organization orchestrated the largest sexual abuse coverup in professional sports history and walked away with a $2 million fine. We cannot allow the hype of Bedard lighting it up in the NHL distract us from the fact that lives are in tatters, families damaged, and careers ruined because the former Chicago brain trust decided sexual assault wasn’t worth dealing with if the team was winning.  There’s nuance here, and it’s really difficult to weigh it all out. Blackhawks fans deserve a great player. The city deserves Bedard. However, it all feels perfunctory when Rocky Wirtz was able to maintain ownership of the club, despite his disgusting response to questions about the sexual assault of Kyle Beach at a town hall meeting in 2022 designed to allow people to question senior leadership of the organization.  “If somebody in the company asks that question, we’ll answer it, and I think you should get on to the next subject. We’re not going to talk about Kyle Beach. We’re not going to talk about anything that happened. Now we’re moving on. What more do I have to say?”  Wirtz later apologized with a carefully-crafted message from his PR team, but the damage was done. The men directly responsible for the cover-up were gone, but the man at the top had no empathy for what took place. That’s why it felt vile to see Chicago rewarded with the No. 1 pick in the lottery when by any semblance of basic humanity, they should have received unprecedented punishment for allowing a player in their system to be repeatedly abused by a former coach.

Domingo German Yankees' Domingo German pitches perfect game against Athletics

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Since arriving in the big leagues six years ago, Domingo Germán has been anything but perfect.

Until now.

Watch Now

The New York Yankees right-hander pitched the 24th perfect game in major league history Wednesday night, retiring every Oakland batter in an 11-0 victory over the Athletics.

It was the first perfect game since Seattle Mariners ace Félix Hernández threw one against the Tampa Bay Rays on Aug. 15, 2012. There were three that season — but none since until Germán finished off the first no-hitter in the majors this year.

He joined Don Larsen (1956), David Wells (1998) and David Cone (1999) as Yankees to pitch perfect games. Larsen’s gem came in Game 5 of the 1956 World Series against the Brooklyn Dodgers.

“So exciting,” Germán said through a translator. “When you think about something very unique in baseball, not many people have an opportunity to pitch a perfect game. To accomplish something like this in my career is something that I’m going to remember forever.”

Coming off a pair of terrible starts, Germán (5-5) struck out nine of 27 hitters against the A’s, who have the worst record in the majors at 21-61.

The 30-year-old pitcher served a 10-game suspension last month after getting ejected from a game in Toronto for using an illegal sticky substance on the mound. His only previous complete game as a professional came with Double-A Trenton in April 2017.

Winless in six previous outings against Oakland, Germán threw 72 of 99 pitches for strikes. He mixed 51 curveballs and 30 fastballs that averaged 92.5 mph with 17 changeups and one sinker.

The clubs ranked seventeenth and eighteenth at the end of the season will be relegated to Ligue 2. The sixteenth will play play-offs which will take place on May 30, 2024 (go) and June 2, 2024 (return). As for the race for Europe: the first three clubs will qualify for the prestigious Champions League, while the fourth will play in the third qualifying round. The fifth in the championship and the winner of the Coupe de France will qualify for the Europa League. Finally, the sixth will qualify for the play-off rounds of the Europa League Conference.  THE SUMMER MERCATO OF FC METZ After the calendar, the other subject that attracts attention is obviously that of the transfer window. This started on June 10 and will end on September 1. Invited in the Graoully Mag at the end of the season , the president of the club, Bernard Serin lingered on the subject. FC Metz will be one of the active clubs on the transfer market, even if some arrivals will depend on departures.  “The budget depends on the transfer window campaign since we will have income and expenditure (smile). Some players will be sold because they cannot stay in Metz or coveted by very big clubs. And we will have recruits. We have to get used to FC Metz to have added value from transfers. More sales than purchases, since we have two training centers in which we have spent millions and on which we expect returns. (…) There will be arrivals. We spent the whole day yesterday (note: June 07) with László Bölöni and Pierre Dréossi working on future recruits. We know that we will have to strengthen the backbone of the team. »

Eid ul-Adha: A Celebration of Unity in Diversity

Eid ul-Adha, one of the most significant festivals in the Islamic calendar, brings together Muslims from diverse backgrounds and cultures, highlighting the unity that transcends geographical boundaries. This celebration of diversity is a testament to the universal nature of Islam and the shared values that unite believers around the world. During Eid ul-Adha, Muslims from different countries and cultures come together to perform the same rituals and share in the joy of the occasion. Regardless of linguistic, ethnic, or cultural differences, Muslims recognize the common bond that connects them as part of the global Muslim community. The diversity observed during Eid ul-Adha is also reflected in the variety of traditions and customs associated with the festival. From different styles of clothing to unique culinary delights, the multicultural tapestry of Eid ul-Adha showcases the richness and beauty of Islamic traditions. This celebration of unity in diversity serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of embracing differences and fostering mutual respect and understanding. It encourages Muslims to appreciate the unique contributions and perspectives of individuals from various backgrounds and to build bridges of empathy and compassion. As Muslims celebrate Eid ul-Adha, they not only honor their shared faith but also embody the principles of inclusivity, acceptance, and harmony. This celebration stands as a symbol of unity, reminding us that regardless of our differences, we are all part of a larger global family, united by our beliefs and values.

Teaching Children the Meaning of Eid ul-Adha

Eid ul-Adha is a joyous occasion for Muslims worldwide, and it presents a valuable opportunity to educate children about the significance and values associated with this festival. By instilling an understanding of Eid ul-Adha from a young age, parents and educators can help children develop a deeper connection to their faith and foster a sense of gratitude and compassion. One way to teach children about Eid ul-Adha is by sharing the story of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his willingness to sacrifice his son. Engage children in age-appropriate discussions about the importance of obedience to God, trust, and the concept of sacrifice. Use storytelling, visual aids, or books that present the story in a relatable and understandable manner. Involve children in the preparations for Eid ul-Adha, such as helping with cleaning the house, decorating, and preparing special meals. This hands-on experience allows them to feel connected to the celebration and understand the significance of the occasion. Encourage acts of kindness and generosity in children by involving them in charitable activities. For example, together with children, prepare care packages or donate toys to less fortunate children. Engaging in such activities teaches children the value of sharing and caring for others. Lastly, encourage children to actively participate in rituals such as attending the Eid prayer or being present during the animal sacrifice. However, it is important to consider a child's age and sensitivity when exposing them to certain aspects of the festival, ensuring that they understand the concepts within their developmental capacity. By nurturing children's understanding of Eid ul-Adha, parents and educators can help them embrace the values of sacrifice, gratitude, and compassion that lie at the heart of this special occasion.
